3 Little-Known Facts About Quartz

Less Known Facts About Quartz
Quartz is quickly becoming a popular choice for countertops. A growing number of homeowners are now familiar with this countertop option, but there's still plenty you may not know about this type of stone. Here are 3 interesting things you likely didn't know about quartz but should.

1. Quartz Is Harder Than Granite

Granite is incredibly hard and durable, but quartz countertops exceed this standard. Quartz is about 5 times harder than granite. These manmade countertops also have no pores or cracks.

2. Quartz Countertops Come in Almost Endless Colors

Quartz countertops are engineered by combining about 97 percent ground quartz and 3 percent resin, colors, and polymers by weight. Because these countertops are made from a blend of stone and resin, the manufacturer can create almost any pattern, texture, and color you want. Quartz countertops can mimic granite or marble or they can look like nothing else. Many quartz manufacturers offer brilliant modern color schemes with names like Apple Martini. Recycled materials can even be added during manufacturing to expand the color options available to you. It's possible to get a countertop that looks like natural stone but with colors you won't find in nature. In the past, quartz was only available with a polished finish, but this is no longer true. Now, you can get quartz countertops with a sandblasted, embossed, or honed treatment to get the look of textured slate or glossy granite.

3. Quartz Requires Very Little Maintenance

Quartz is not natural stone but an engineered product. Because it's made with resin, engineered quartz countertops are completely nonporous and never need to be sealed. The countertop only needs to be wiped down daily. Most surface stains can be easily removed with a cleaning product. The only thing to keep in mind is harsh cleaning products and scouring pads should be avoided because they can break the bonds between the resins and quartz. A stone-safe cleaner such as Granite Gold Daily Cleaner® is recommended for quartz countertops.
